Crouching Spider Gesture

So far I'm really enjoying OS X 10.7 Lion. It's doesn't completely redefine the already excellent Apple desktop interface, but it is a step forward in evolutionary terms. Mission control is a real boon if you're someone who uses lots of applications at the same tiime and is able to work in different mental spaces. Being able to effortlessly swipe between collections of programs is delightful. The scrolling reversall was very odd at first, but a few days of practice have got me used to the idea. It's not quite 100% embedded, but it's getting there.

The one aspect that doesn't sit well at the moment is the 'crouching spider' gesture, used to bring up the new iPhone/iPad style display of app icons. Unless I slow down and think carefully about it, I wind up sliding or scrolling. To be honest, I'm not sure I can see the point of this part of the interface on desktop or laptop machines. The dock is such an effective tool, that I don't really see the need. Maybe it's part of a more intricate strategy by Apple and will become clear in time, or maybe they're just moving closer to one OS?
